As one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, Ayurveda has developed in India almost 3,000 years ago. It’s believed that health and wellness depend on maintaining a balance between the mind, body, and spirit.
Its main aim is to promote good health, not fight disease. But therapy may be prepared for specific health problems.
According to students of CAM therapy, everything in the universe, whether it is alive or dead, is connected. If your mind, body, and spirit are harmonious, you are in good health. When something interrupts this balance, you fall sick. Among the things that can disrupt this balance are genetic or birth defects, injuries, climate and seasonal change, age, and emotions.
In Ayurveda, the five basic elements of the universe are believed to create each individual: space, air, fire, water, and earth, which combine in the body to form three life energies.
There are three main doshas in your body: Vata dosha (space and air); Pitta dosha (fire and water); and Kapha dosha (water and earth). Everyone inherits a unique combination, but one is usually stronger than the others. Each one controls a particular part of your body.
Vata dosha
This is considered to be the strongest dosha in Ayurveda because it controls many of your basic body functions. This includes how cells divide, blood flow, heart function, and the ability to eliminate waste.
Pitta dosha
Your digestion is controlled by this energy, as is your metabolism (how well you break down food). Things that disrupt this energy are sour or spicy foods, as well as spending too much time in the sun.
Kapha dosha
A lack of sleep during the day, eating too many sweet foods, and eating or drinking things containing too much salt and water can disrupt this life force. It regulates muscle growth, strength and stability of the body, weight, and the immune system.
